What is the ruling please -  if a player throws the ball in, and then runs into field of play to play the ball before anyone else touches the ball.

Provided the player actually touches the ball (other than with the hands), the ruling is that an indirect free kick is awarded from the position from where the kick is taken (see law 15 - the infringements and sanctions section).
